Alpha2EQ®

We are delighted to provide a cutting edge orthobiologic treatment for many different applications and uses – from Lameness to Asthma!

What is Alpha2EQ®?

The Alpha2EQ® processing and filtration system utilises a unique alpha-2-macroglobulin technology. It is a safe and effective treatment and could be used for a variety of conditions and for all type of horses; from performance horses during competition season to older ponies with underlying conditions (such as Equine Metabolic Syndrome) where use of corticosteroids carries a laminitis risk.

Alpha2EQ® is an orthobiologic which means it can be produced by a horse’s own blood. It contains high concentrations of Alpha2 macroglobulin. But we hear you saying what is an “alpha-2-macroglobulin molecule”?

Alpha-2-macroglobulin is a potent anti-inflammatory molecule which is a naturally occurring protein within the blood. The molecule has the ability to block the destructive effect of certain enzymes by capturing them in a “trap” and rendering them as ineffective. When you get inflammation within the body due to disease, trauma or even natural “wear and tear” these destructive enzymes cause pain and in many instance lameness. By removing the destructive enzymes, pain can be subsequently removed too.

What can Alpha2EQ® be used for?

Alpha2EQ® can be used in all joints to target degenerative joint disease or arthritis and soft tissue injuries such as flexor tendons or suspensory ligaments. Horses and ponies that suffer with asthma, could also be benefited by this treatment. It is laminitis-risk free and it does not have a competition withdrawal time.

If you horse suffers from asthma and you would like to discuss more details, please contact the office on 01442 851921 or email admin@farrandpursey.com.

How is Alpha2EQ® made?

We simply need to draw blood in a sterile manner from your horse. The blood is then processed at our on-site lab; this usually takes approximately an hour. The final product is then ready to be used or stored in the freezer for up to 12 months for future use. We offer kits of 15ml or 30ml.

How is Alpha2EQ® administered?

For treating degenerative joint disease or arthritis, Alpha2EQ can be administered by your veterinarian directly into joints (intra-articular) in a standard aseptic manner. Your horse might require sedation for that.

Similarly, it could be injected in and around soft tissues, such as flexor tendons or suspensory ligaments for treatment of soft tissue injuries.

Asthmatic horses or ponies can have Alpha2EQ® via a nebuliser. The usual protocol consists of six treatments, 48 hours apart but this should be discussed with your vet.

Will my horse need box rest or a long rehabilitation plan after joint injection with Alpha2EQ®?

Results can be seen in as little as 7 days. We usually advise that your horse is kept box rested for 24 hours following treatment of a joint with Alpha2EQ®. This can be followed by a small paddock or stable rest with no exercise for 2 days. Light WALK hacking can be introduced on the 4th day following treatment until the 7th day when we recommend a post injection assessment to reassure efficacy of the treatment.

Most cases see a positive result for around 3-6 months.
